Our club closed championship will take place on Sunday 11th November. It will follow the same format as previous years with all matches played on one day, with the slight possibility of a separate finals day if the number of entrants is very large. I hope every member will play in at least one competition, the handicaps will be particularly attractive but also the main events will be run with place played right down through the order using the Monrad system, so plenty of matches.
– Club Championship – this will be run as a MONRAD for the 16 highest ranked entrants on Squash levels on 3rd November. With 16 entrants, all players will play 4 matches. The first 3 will be best of 3, PAR11 and the final best of 5
– Ladies Championship – boxes or knockout and plate, depending on numbers
– Racketball Championship – MONRAD, All matches best of 3, PAR15
– Squash Handicap Competition – MONRAD for 16 players with preference given to those not in the main competition. With 16 entrants all players will have 4 matches
– Racketball Handicap Competition – seeded draw and plate or MONRAD.
This should be a really good day. I will try to schedule matches to give suitable breaks but without too much waiting around. Hopefully we will conclude in the late afternoon and with the system being MONRAD we should have a good social occasion. Any questions please give me a call, otherwise, I look forward to hearing from you with details of the competition(s) you wish to enter.

Timmy Skopets recently won the U11 event in the Kent Junior Closed to become the 2018 Kent County U11 champion.
He is a junior member here at the Poult Wood Squash & Racketball Club, where he has been playing since age 6.
Congratulations, Timmy. You’ve made the club very proud.
For the second year in a row Poult Wood SRC ran a successful junior squash open competition over the weekend of 24-25 March 2018, this time in cooperation with our neighbours at Tunbridge Wells Squash Club. There were altogether 73 entrants in seven different categories and some great squash was on display throughout the weekend
The Boys under 11 and Girls under 13 competitions were held in entirety at Tunbridge Wells on the Saturday. Freddy Miles (Kent) won the Bu11 competition convincingly with Zachary Woolven (Surrey) runner up. In Gu13 Ailsa Bruce (Surrey) was the winner and won all 4 of her games, with Annabelle Hill (Surrey) runner up.
The Girls under 15 was run as a round robin starting at Tunbridge Wells and finishing at Poult Wood. Jodie Dowe (Norfolk) won comfortably with Isabel McCullough (Kent) the runner up.
The other categories were all run at Poult Wood. The Boys under 13 final was well contested with last year’s winner Dylan Roberts (Kent) winning again, this time 3-1 against Jake Sim-Baskar (Sussex) in the final. Jake went 2-0 down before winning a close third game, then Dylan took the fourth game comfortably.
The Boys under 15 was won by Harvey McIntyre (Kent) who put in a strong performance in the final to win a close 3-0 against Mehul Chopra (Kent) with good squash from both players.
Ellie Hewes (Essex) was a clear winner in the Girls under 17 winning all her matches in another round robin event, with Abigail Wilkinson (Middlesex) runner up after the two played out the final deciding match.
The Boys under 17 final was played last, and was an exceptional match with Joss Sim-Baskar (Sussex) finally overcoming Ben Harrison (Middlesex) 12-10 in the final game. The squash was competitive and to a very high standard, with both players showing excellent composure and temperament. A credit to both players and the tournament.
The event was well supported by parents and friends at both venues with excellent food available from Azra at Poult Wood and Tim at Tunbridge Wells. Thanks to all of them.
A big thank you to all the volunteers who helped at both venues, especially Richard Morris who looked after the Tunbridge Wells event, and Tony Hooper who amongst other things did the scheduling for the entire event, a massive task, and ran the desk at Poult Wood on both days. And particular thanks to all the team players who marked some of games and oversaw the juniors marking other games. This was essential to the smooth running of the tournament.
And finally many thanks to Chris Gorman, coach at Poult Wood, and tournament sponsor.
Congratulations to Isaac Banham and Edward Johnson, our new club champions. The finals were very closely fought with both winners and runners up playing good competitive squash. The standard has improved considerably from last year and we have some worthy winners and some future club champions in the making.

This spring, England Squash are offering the chance to become a qualified England Squash Level 1 coach by attending a subsidised course in return for the delivery of female-only squash or Squash 57 sessions.
The course costs £50 and in return England Squash would like coaches to deliver at least 10 female-only squash sessions. Coaches will be provided with resources to promote and deliver the sessions including: a free Dunlop kit bag, access to the Squash Girls Can Toolkit and support to help them develop. This is a great opportunity for clubs who are keen to increase female participation, or players who are keen to become coaches.
In two years, England Squash have upskilled more than 70 female coaches and leaders to deliver Squash Girls Can sessions. This year, our ambition is to double that amount.

Our numbers for coaching are lower this Sunday, just the 35 kids instead of the usual 60+ because of a fixture clash between Surrey and Kent events.
As a result we will not need the courts until 11am, so if members of the public turn up early on Sunday, they can play.
Apologies there has been a mix up with communications with Azra and therefore this month’s club night will switch to Thursday.
Courts will be 3 and 4, as the leak has been temporarily fixed.
Sorry for anyone planning to come and now can’t, next month will be on the last Wednesday, which is the 25th.
The West Kent Juniors League will be playing their matches at Poult Wood on the 1 October 2017. Consequently, courts will not be available to the public or club members until 6pm.
