Junior Coaching resumes for the Summer term on Saturday 22nd April

Our junior coaching resumes for the Summer term on Saturday 22nd April.

We will have 10 sessions, starting on 22nd, missing the weekends at the beginning and end of half term (27th May and 3rd June) and concluding on 8th July.

It is usual at this time of year to have quite a few players leaving and joining. Exams and summer sports mean a few players take a break from squash and the end of the rugby and football season means a few join. Therefore please would everyone reply to me and Chris to indicate if you will be rejoining. Priority will be given to players who sign up for the full 10 sessions but if space permits, players who are in years 11, 12 and 13 may opt to pay for 5 sessions to give some flexibility around exam commitments. This will be at the discretion of the club on a first come first served basis if space is available.

The club makes the flexibity available but experience suggests it is good to keep up exercise during exams and studying. With the sessions being an hour, so perhaps around 2 hours away from books, students may wish to think about this before opting for 5 sessions or taking a complete break.

Please respond by next weekend (15th April) in order that Chris will know the position when he returns from holiday and can advise everyone.

The cost of the 10 sessions is £60 and payment can be made using the Paypal button on poultwood.com or by bank transfer to 309253 and 01336613 quoting the players name.
Thanks, Tony

Poult Wood Sumner Malik event – report

What a fun day! Thanks to everyone who took part and to others who could not play but supported with contributions, messages and by coming along to spectate. Joining the Poult Wood players we had visitors from Limpsfield, Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells and Leinster, making it our first international tournament!

You can see the make up of the teams and the format on the attachment and the overall results were:

1st Dessouky’s Dodgy Drops – 31 points -Crichton, Hicks, Terrell (T), Ansari and Skopets (Y)
2nd Serme’s Serve Outs – 30 points – Flanagan, Hooper, Joskas and Skopets (T)
3rd Massaro’s Miss Hits – 29 points – Kehoe, Worrall, Terrell (S) and Moss

We had some very good contributions to the event’s smooth running with Andrew Moss helping coordinate the matches, Mark Crichton, Sam Cleaver and James Flanagan keeping a good eye on their teams and all the games in general. Sophie Terrell for playing when under the weather, Martin for standing in as a reserve and Timmy for keeping the courts and balls warm during gaps in play! It was good to get some non-squash players out with Toby and Yuriy starring in a dad’s match (certainly beats the usual sports day parents event) and to have Oscar Kehoe showing James how squash is played in Ireland! Finally, thanks to everyone taking their turn marking and updating the score board plus TM Active and Azra Catering for their support.

The joint aims of the day were to enjoy a good club based event and to support Sumner Malik through contributing to his treatment and good time fund. Both objectives were achieved with some close and entertaining matches at all standards and very generous contributions from members. Overall after payment of modest expenses to run the day, we raised a magnificent £638. This will go to Sumner’s fund in the name of Poult Wood Squash Club.

Thanks to everyone who took part. I hope you enjoyed it and look forward to a similar event in next year’s calendar.

Report on our Junior Open Competition 2017

The club hosted a highly successful Bronze level junior open tournament on Sunday 26 February 2017. There were over 50 entries from 6 counties, including 4 from Poult Wood’s own junior section, with boys’ categories u13, u15 and u17 and girls’ u15 and u17. The event was well supported by parents and friends who were treated to a feast of excellent squash.
Many thanks to all the club members who gave up their time to help on the day, marking matches and generally keeping things moving smoothly along. The nerve centre was the front desk where Tony and Elizabeth Hooper expertly ran a complex operation of court scheduling and collating the results as they came in.
Also a big thank you to Azra’s Lisa and her team for providing a great service in the bar and restaurant, with an excellent snack menu designed specially for the day, which many visitors took advantage of.
It was great to see four of Poult Wood’s junior players entering the tournament – Dan Boshoff and Alfie Peacock in  the Boys u17, Anna Hooper in the Girls u17, and  Timmy Skopets in the Boys u13. Dan finished 5th overall, beating in his last game Matt Proctor, the first time he has done so, and Matt plays in the Kent A team. Timmy, playing in his first ranked tournament, and at the age of 9 the second youngest player in the whole tournament, played well, in the end losing to a plate finalist. Alfie, also in his first ranked tournament, had some tough games against much more experienced players, but learned a lot from taking part. Anna finished a creditable 4th in the Girls u17 event after reaching the semi finals, with two tough matches against other strong Kent county players. They all did the club proud.
The winners and runners up were
BU13 winner Dylan Roberts (Kent), r/up Jude Gibbins (Kent)
BU15 winner Arhan Chandra (Bucks), r/up Mehul Chopra (Kent)
BU17 winner James Gibbins( Kent), r/up Luke Credland (Sussex)
GU15 winner Elize Chaplin (Kent), r/up Annabel Williamson (Kent)
GU17 winner Alice Coxeter (Kent), r/up Karishma Bansal (Kent)

I would like to give a big thank you to all the players and also parents and friends for supporting this event. This was a great day for the club. We were proud to host the junior open and witnessed some superb squash.

Tournament Director

Charlton Athletic Community trust

On the 14th February Chris Gorman, our lead juniors coach, ably assisted by Tony Hooper, hosted a special activity day for the Charlton Athletic Community trust. The day was a huge success.

Terry Peart from the trust said “In terms of the sessions in all honesty it was probably one of the best sporting sessions we have had delivered by a 3rd party organisation”, which is great to hear.

Terry went on to say “All of the clients were engaged for the whole session”

Its very positive to hear such rave reviews and is testament to PWSRC’s continual support of coaching, within the club and the surrounding area.

Well done Chris and Tony.

Team competition day in aid of Sumner Malik. 12 March 2017

The club is hosting a team based squash day at Poult Wood on Sunday 12th March and all members, adults and juniors are invited to take part.

The format is a team based event, with all matches played on Sunday 12th March. All entrants will be placed into teams of roughly equal strength and composition, with teams competing in a mini league. The exact make up will be decided based on the number of people who are able to play. As a rough guide we hope to have teams of 5 with 1 or 2 Club Team Players, 1 or 2 Ordinary members and 1 or 2 juniors. This will ensure everyone has competitive matches with their opponents being of similar standard. There will be a lot of games to be played and therefore the format will most likely be Best of 3, PAR to 11. All players should get a minimum of 3 matches, most likely 4.

The day will start at 9.30am, there will be a light lunch provided (minestrone soup and a roll) and should finish around 4pm. It will be a really fun day and another good event for club members following the success of our 1 day club championship.

This is an event which the club has thought running about for some time and has decided to dedicate the first one to raising funds for Sumner Malik. Many of you will have heard about Sumner and may also have supported him. However for those that are not aware, Sumner is a 10 year old boy who comes from a local squash mad family. He has a condition called DIPG which is a brain tumour affecting children and for which treatment is at the trial stage. He has had the first operation which involved surgery to create a vent into his skull and he now needs to receive monthly infusions. Each of these costs £6000 and we are keen to try and help. http://squashmad.com/breaking-news/squash-rallies-round-for-sumner-malik/

As the first event is for Sumner we hope players will be happy to pay £25 to enter the event. All money except the lunch cost will be sent as a donation from the club towards his treatment.

Final details for the day will be published much nearer the date. Please email me to let me know if you can take part and I will ensure you are placed in a team.

Regards, Tony
